29 Oct 11 MJ GenV Unloading

Here is a shot I got of one of the Blue Mountains GenVs unloading 6.68t of garbage at the council’s Blaxland landfill facility. I reckon it’s cool how the public unload where the trucks unload, no extremely strict safety bullshit that you find at many government facilties. I’ve gotta say, they should get a green-waste service here after seeing this load. However, when I contacted the council asking about why there isn’t one, the councillor who replied gave me a handful of reasons as to why they don’t have a green-waste service up there – cost, transport, contracts, product demands, etc. Hope you enjoy the footage, please rate and comment. If you haven’t already, check out the video of the Blue Mountains clean-up truck unloading on this exact same ground.

One Wednesday during January 2009, I visited the City of Botany Bay when they still had the manual recycling collections with crates. Down in Botany everything is collected weekly, with the council removing the garbage and green-waste and Veolia taking care of the recycling. The truck in this video is what I believe to be one of Veolia’s (formerly Collex) original recycling trucks, specifically designed for the collection of bottles and containers. The truck is broken into four compartments: the top is for steel cans, aluminium, cartons and plastic containers, and the bottom three compartments (from left to right) are for clear, green and brown glass. The bottles are tipped into a ‘tray’ like section which spans across the rear of the truck where all the sorting takes place. I remember a lot of these types of trucks existed when recycling was first introduced, before MRFs started to really come into fashion. I hope you enjoy the footage of this rarely seen collection, it’d be great if you rated and commented, be sure to check out the second video of this and take a look at the other Botany videos. I’d also like to give a big thanks to the hard-working guys on the back of this truck, very friendly blokes and nice to have a chat to. With what I saw, they’re a speedy team and definitely deserve a cold beer at the end of the day! 29 Oct 11 Adventures with Sean (New mini + Bulk + missed FLs)

so other than the Bulk FL we had terrible luck. We caught the mini right before he finnished so we only got about 4 stops, I saw a crown stagg (i think) pulling away and when we caught up to the Consolidated FL it to just pulled away from its last bin. But the bulk driver (51 years old beleive it or not) doing bulk alone as if he was in his twenties. A great guy who may be watching these video himself. Well enjoy pt 2

So, basically EDI’s RRs suck when it comes to revving. But thank God EDCO has some older, quicker, BETTER trucks like this among its large fleet. #626 is definitely the fastest Heil Rapid Rail I’ve seen in person, and I’m very proud to share with you now! Enjoy!

I caught this truck on a Friday morning in the units collecting the bottle bins. There were three of these trucks in my council when Veolia ran the show. Big thanks to the driver, funny how he let that one 240L fly! =]

25 Oct 11 Garbage Converted to Fuel, Discovery in Czech Republic

WONG: Czech scientists are carrying out a unique experiment of international importance. They have found out how to change household waste into food for animals and fuel for cars. STORY: Experts in algae and energetic use of wastes have designed a scientific process to transform municipal waste into bio-fuel for cars and good class food for animals. The star performer in the process is algae. Certain algae thrive on the carbon dioxide formed while burning the waste. [Msc Petr Novak, Director for Ecology] male “We were of course surprised too, the quality of algae is so high that they are suitable for utilization in the food-processing industry and at the same time it is confirmation that burnt gas from our wastes incinerator is very clean. As wastes are burnt the smoke-gas goes through a filter and heads for a water bath where scientist have placed algae. Algae transform the burnt gas into protein and from protein they make starch. This starch is used in the production of bio-ethanol to be used in place of petrol. [Petr Novak, Director for Ecology] male “The effect lies mainly in that carbon dioxide forms as much as 50 percent of expenses in the production of algae and here it is actually for free.” Moreover the algae grow 30 times faster than maize or soy from which bio-fuel is commonly produced. The Scientific team will patent their discovery in Europe and the USA. NTDTV, Liberec, Czech Republic
