15 Nov 11 E-Waste Recycling

Visit: adamslecture.blogspot.com Hi, i’m a student of BSc. Occupational Safety and Health (Hons), UNISEL, Malaysia. Just want to share some fundamental knowledge on Hazardous Waste Management of Electronic Waste. “Electronic waste” may be defined as all secondary computers, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, and other items such as television sets and refrigerators, whether sold, donated, or discarded by their original owners. Electronic waste, or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) describes loosely discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. Informal processing of electronic waste in developing countries causes serious health and pollution problems. Some electronic scrap components, such as CRTs, contain contaminants such as lead, cadmium, beryllium, mercury, and brominated flame retardants. Even in developed countries recycling and disposal of e-waste may involve significant risk to workers and communities and great care must be taken to avoid unsafe exposure in recycling operations and leaching of material such as heavy metals from landfills and incinerator ashes. Increased regulation of electronic waste and concern over the environmental harm which can result from toxic electronic waste has not raised disposal costs though. The regulation creates an economic disincentive to remove residues prior to export. Defenders of the trade in used electronics say that extraction of metals from virgin mining has also been

23 Oct 11 Holroyd Recycling

This is my 300th video, and the featured truck is also the first Richards side loader to make its way onto YouTube. This one was built by JJ Richards; one of their massive recycling models… At the time of video these trucks were still quite new, having just replaced the old split trucks that used to collect the recycling in Holroyd. Then they decided to turn to a new commingled recycling service which is where two of these trucks were prepared and sent down to Sydney. This was the first time I got to see one of these trucks in action, and they seem to run pretty well. I’m sure a lot of you will now recognise the famous Iveco Acco… it doesn’t have the new cab, but it’s still equipped with the new Cummins engine. I hope you enjoy the footage, please rate and comment. If you haven’t already, check out the short video of the garbage collection and the other shorter recycling video. I also have some better quality Holroyd footage uploaded which you may like to check out. Body Make: JJR Engineering Model: 35m Side Loader (Recycle Body) Chassis: Iveco Acco Council: Holroyd City Contractor: JJ Richards & Sons Collection Type: Commingled Recycling

You have a ribbed 19 cubic metre body, a full-length comb lifter on the back, a heavy duty drum winch and one of Superior Pak’s destructive compactors… what do you get? A truck that’s ready to hammer any commercial and industrial route… The Superior Pak (ex- Compaction Systems) Maxi Pak is available in 15, 17, 19, 21 and 25 cubic metre models. This body can be found on a heavy C&I route or in the dense residential streets of Australia. With its speedy container handling mechanisms, large hopper capacity, rigid body designs and of course the powerful compactor, the Maxi Pak will finish any job it is given, whether heavy duty applications such as council clean-ups and bulk bin collections or light duty work such as public litter bin collections. Hope you enjoy the video and pictures, all ratings and comments are highly appreciated. I also threw in some pictures of the previous smaller bodied rear loaders Compaction Systems used to produce.

07 Oct 11 Leichhardt Bottles Recycling

Now here’s the recycling collection in Leichhardt, done by a small MJ rear loader during bottles week – specifically chosen for the crashing =] There were some real nice sharp crashes, with some of these bins full of glass being summer; I bet it affects the hearing after a while! Also you got more manual lifting here, some real heavy bins that make this the ultimate workout. I reckon if companies want to stop the guys lifting the bins manually, because of occupational safety, they need to make the lifter work faster… otherwise this becomes the most efficient and fastest means of collection. I’d like to give a big cheers to this team, a very friendly couple of blokes. Definitely some hard workers who should be able to put their feet up, sit in front of a digital widescreen TV and have a beer in hand at the end of the day :) Hope you enjoy the footage, please rate and comment, then take a look at the garbage collection. 06 Oct 11 Randwick Recycling (MJ GenV Recycler)

This is one of the GenV Recyclers that I got to see in Randwick collecting the recycling. You may notice that the recycling bins are still divided from the old Veolia contract, which have now been replaced with brand new bins. I wish I got videos of the old divided recycling trucks, would’ve been cool to see! I would also like to thank the driver for doing some extra streets for me as he was finished for the day. Would’ve worked out better if the first driver was more helpful. In addition, a big thanks goes to the council officer who helped me with the collection areas 😀 Check out the video responses for a video of the new features on the GenV and for the two videos I have of the garbage collection. I also had to use two cameras because one ran out of space, so that’s why the quality changes about halfway through – sorry about that. Hope you enjoy the footage, please rate and comment. 05 Oct 11 Manly Commercial Recycling (Paper & Cardboard)

In this one truck #631 is taking care of the commercial paper recycling early on a Monday morning. First there’re a heap of 240Ls from an apartment, then a 1.5m filled with cardboard and then a few 360Ls at the end.

Usually there was a larger 28m JP5 doing this job, but it was doing the clean-up in Hunters Hill on this particular Wednesday. So instead I came across this very old JP5 on an International taking care of business. This was definitely one of the original URM vehicles! Two different Veolia MJs on two different Wednesdays take part in this video – one is collecting the paper and the other is collecting the bottles, with a bit of a ‘demo run’ through the middle.

01 Oct 11 Mosman Bottles Recycling

Here we’ve got the bottles recycling later on during that Friday morning. By this stage the rain had started to come down… pissed me off when a couple of drops hit the lense on the last clip! lol Wasn’t as much crashing involved as I hoped, but there was still a bit. The driver was also keen for me to get a shot of him handling all the bins that were clumped together in the 3rd clip; he did that pick-up very well! The last clip gives you an idea of how tight the access is to some of the streets these drivers need to get into. Hope you guys enjoy the footage, all ratings and comments would be awesome. Big thanks to the driver for making this footage possible and hope he enjoys the footage too! Also if you haven’t already, take a look at the video of the garbage collection with this truck and the video of the little 4×2 side loader picking up the garbage too.
