11 Nov 11 Large Solar Heater project.

This is the third solar heater I have been working on for a while. It’s made from a sliding glass door. I’m working on this for the winter months to keep the house warm. I’m currently working on the stand to hold this beast up in the back yard. I’m hoping with all 3 units my home will stay warm during the day without the help of the hvac unit during the winter.

09 Nov 11 Cheap Solar Heat

Last winter my boys and I made a very cheap solar heater with a large south facing window in our second story computer/ homeschool room. We just hung a black plastic sheet on the inside of the window with curtain rods. This left about 1.5″ for natural convection to take place. It draws the cooler air near the floor and the heat just flows out the top. This room would always get warm with the sun shining in, but with just this black sheet I was able to turn off my heater (forced air) and just leave the fan on to circulate this heat throughout the house. I also used a portable fan to move heat out of that room so we could stand working in there on our computers. On sunny days with below freezing temperatures outside , I could shut off our heater from 11:00 am to about 6:00 pm and stay perfectly warm and comfortable inside the house.

How to make free solar hot air collectors at home with free materials, these are made from old light fixtures, uses glass, surplus foam board and used metal siding. After these collectors are installed we will have a blower fan to force cool air through a manifold system from the the house into the bottom holes. The hot air being forced out the top will be channeled to different rooms of the house. The blower motor will have a thermostat to come on only when there is enough heat produced within the collector. A second thermostat will control the maximum temp. so the house does not overheat.
